College Planning Timelines by Grade Level
Students begin a year of academic, personal, and spiritual growth by establishing strong academic habits, learning to find balance, recognizing their strengths and learning styles, and expanding their interests in extracurricular activities. Their primary job is do the best they can be in a new setting.
- Get involved in school and community-based activities that interest you or let you explore your career interests.
- Consider school clubs, athletics, arts, as well as volunteering, work, etc.
- Build strong study habits.
- Attend the Christian College Fair in September at Berean.
- Take the PSAT 8/9 in October.
- Create a 4-year plan high school plan.
- Starting thinking about life after high school, including jobs that might interest you.
- Take the "Self-Discovery" assessments in Naviance to explore how you best learn with the Learning & Productivity, Intelligences, and Skills assessments.
- Meet with Miss Grieb to discuss 10th grade courses.
- Start visiting college campuses over the breaks or with older siblings.
- Explore summer opportunities (job, internship, volunteering, etc.).
Students return to Berean with what is now familiar. Lessons learned in the first year are applied thoughtfully, completing the establishment of a two year foundation upon which the second half of their high school years will depend. They dive into career exploration, college research, practice with the PSAT, further involvement in extracurricular activities, and course planning for the next two years of high school.
- Continue to get involved in school and community extracurriculars.

- Take the PSAT 10 in October.
- Meet with Miss Grieb for your 11th grade course selection meeting.
- Continue completing or editing your 4-year planning worksheet.
- Start to add extracurricular involvements, awards, and courses to your Naviance Resume.
- Explore careers in Naviance with the Career Cluster Finder, Career Interest Profiler, Strengths Explorer, Skills, or Personality assessments.
- Keep strong study habits.
- Attend local college admissions information sessions and visit colleges over the breaks.
- Along with family, do some research about how to obtain financial aid.
Juniors begin the college and career counseling process with Mrs. Tegeler. They have two CCC meetings, one in 1st semester, and a 2nd throughout the Spring semester. In our one-on-one meetings, we discuss post-high school goals, course planning for senior year, followed by creating a standardized testing plan, online research of colleges, college application requirements, and a College Prep Presentation for Juniors and Their Parents/Guardians in early December. By the end of the school year, juniors will have a clearer picture of their academic profile, an initial list of colleges, and be planning a summer that sets up successful engagement with the college application process in the fall. Additionally, juniors are invited to attend a College Application Prep Class held in early June (in between junior and senior year) to get a jump start on their college applications.
Fall Semester
- Meet college reps that visit Berean.
- Seek leadership in organizations and extracurricular activities.
- Explore careers on Naviance with the Career Cluster Finder, Career Interest Profiler, and Personality assessments.
- Attend Christian College Fair in September.
- Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October.
- Attend local and virtual college information sessions.
- Meet with Mrs. Tegeler starting in November for 1st semester Junior Meetings.
- Attend College Prep Night for Juniors and their Parents/Guardians (December).
- Plan college visits over Christian Break.
- Start adding colleges to your Naviance "Colleges I'm Thinking About List" and research them.
- Finalize ACT/SAT testing plan for Spring semester. Register if needed.
Spring Semester
- Meet with Mrs. Tegeler for 2nd Semester Junior Meetings to discuss prospective colleges and application materials.
- Solidify summer plans- work, internship, summer enrichment, volunteer, research, college visits, travel, college courses, etc.
- Visit colleges over Spring Break.
- Attend spring college fairs.
- Attend the WACAC Spring College Fair at Saint Mary's College of CA.
- Create a list of possible teachers to write college letters of recommendation for you.
- Ask the potential teachers in person if they would be willing to write a letter of rec for you.
- Form your list of "Likely," "Target," and "Reach" colleges.
- Update your Naviance "Colleges I'm Thinking About" list.
- Update your Naviance Resume.
Summer
- Brainstorm and draft college essays.
- Draft your college application extracurricular lists.
- Complete Naviance Letter of Recommendation Survey for teachers.
- Visit colleges you are interested in applying to.
- Research colleges to determine your fit, match, and likelihood of admission susing your current academic record and profile.
Mrs. Tegeler partners with seniors to help them with each step of applying to college and solidifying their plans Beyond Berean. We kick off the year with a Graduation & College Prep Night for Seniors and Their Parents/Guardians at Back to School Night. Then Mrs. Tegeler works closely with each senior and personalizes the application process towards them. Seniors will finalize their college list, identify their application deadlines, complete the Letter of Rec (LOR) procedures for teachers and counselor, perhaps sit for one more standardized test, apply for scholarships, and polish up their applications. There will be several application and essay writing workshops held throughout the Fall, and tons of support to guide them through this college admissions process.
Semester 1
August and September

Schedule 1-on-1 senior meeting with Mrs. Tegeler.

Maintain strong study skills!

Continue your commitments and leadership with extracurricular activities, clubs, and other organizations.

Confirm final 8-10 colleges. Add colleges to your Naviance "Colleges I'm Applying to" list.

Check in with your teacher recommenders (if you have colleges that require them). Follow Letter of Rec Procedures.

Attend Essay Workshops after school with Mrs. Tegeler and Mr. Runyon.

Write college-specific supplemental essays.

Finalize college personal statements.

Register and take final tests (ACT, SAT, CLT) before college application deadlines.

Research colleges and their application requirements.

Demonstrate interest in top choise schools: requet info, college fair visits, campus tours, attend info sessions.

Complete CSF (California Scholarship Federation) application if you quality (by late August).

Parents: Start preparing your financial aid paperwork and develop a list of deadlines.

Attend Graduation & College Prep NIght for Seniors and Their Parents/Guardians (at Back to School Night).

Because you self-report your grades, please set up a 10-minute application review meeting with Mrs.Tegeler to double check that grades were inputted correctly.

Meet the college reps tabling in the Student Quad at lunch throughout the month.

Apply for FAFSA and CSS Profile (if applicable).

Send test scores to colleges after checking whether they allow scores and/or if you can self-report scores.

Regular decision (RD) deadlines for private and out-of-state universities are typically around January 1. Complete and submit all RD applications no later than mid-December. Give yourself a relaxing Christmas break by completing all applications before Thanksgiving break!
Semester 2
January-March

Mid-January: Mrs. Tegeler will send mid-year transcripts to any colleges you have applied to on the Common Application.

Mid-February: Enrollment Meeting for Diablo Valley College (mandatory for all seniors planning to attend DVC in the Fall)

If you have been deferred from any EA/ED colleges, and are still very interested in them, contact your admissions representative. Express your continued interest in the college and offer any new and compelling updates (activities, accomplishments, awards, leadership positions, unusual circumtances, etc.)
