Come and See! April 2023

Come and See! April 2023

by Bob Fry, Director of Development

For the last couple of years, we’ve been building the foundation of a long-term Development program for Berean.

Development is, of course, sometimes just a euphemism for “fund raising” but, properly done, it is a lot more than that.  We are carefully considering the funding that we need for all areas of the school from improved facilities to broader course offerings and expanded scholarships.  Along the way we have launched an Endowment which is up, running with spending, gift acceptance and investment policies and modest initial funding. We also have systems and staff in place to support our work.  We will be sharing the details of our development plans in an upcoming issue of the Bulletin.

In the meantime, let’s talk about the “why”.  And the best answer I can give anyone for that is, “Come and See.”  In John’s Gospel when Philip meets Jesus in his excitement he tells his friend, Nathanael, “we have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law (i.e., the Messiah) . . . Jesus of Nazareth.” To which Nathanael replies, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”  Philip doesn’t try and argue or give Nathanael a bunch of reasons, he just says, “Come and See.”  And Nathanael does . . . to his great benefit.

I have been incredibly blessed to be able to spend time on the Berean campus.  For the last year or so I’ve been attending the faculty’s Monday morning meeting every week.  And every week there is some story shared that reveals God at work in the lives of our amazing students.  They excel in their activities. They are kind to and pray with their athletic opponents. They are joyful.  It’s impossible for me to describe.

You may not be able to spend a lot of time on the Berean campus, but you can get a sense of what’s going on by reading two terrific articles about our clubs, written by Berean students in the school’s Eagles Nest newspaper.  The articles were written by Aislinn Fernandes and Nicholas Ballesteros and edited by Olivia Chrisman. You can find these articles on our website here. I found it humbling to read articles by high school students that were so insightful, encouraging and well written.  If I were in school with these kids, I’m pretty sure I’d anchor the low end of the curve!

With that as encouragement, I’d say again, Come and See.  You can schedule a tour of campus on our website here. Alternatively please reach out to our Development Department at development@bereanchristian.com and we’ll arrange a time for someone to meet you on campus.

Blessings,

Bob Fry
