Berean STEM Updates!

Berean STEM Updates!

by Aislinn Fernandes - Berean Christian Newspaper Club

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three
strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12 ).

Though just about every cord on their robot has broken at some point this season, SPQR (Senātus Populusque Rōboticus), Berean’s Competitive Robotics Team, has been able to stand strong, stay positive, and encourage others. Throughout this season, Berean’s competitive team and three club teams have been representing Christ well. Each meeting, the over 20 members can be seen supporting each other’s ideas and innovative thinking while working together to build and program four functioning robots.

This year, SPQR has been able to represent Christ at tournaments as well. From lending parts to other teams to using their robot to physically lift a toppled robotduring a match, SPQR has demonstrated gracious professionalism. Even while working through unfortunate issues, from cords disconnecting mid- round to code deleting itself mid-tournament, SPQR has been able to keep a positive attitude through the end of the season, even going on to win the Motivate Award, an award for positivity and outreach, and the first award the team has won in years.

Recently, the team, coaches, and parent volunteers have also been able to come together to host a tournament at Berean! Through hours of set up—late in the night and early in the morning—and Mrs. Hollenbeck’s thoughtful planning, Berean was able to host over twelve teams from all around California on January 14th for a day of problem-solving, creative thinking, and hands-on-learning. Berean’s competitive team was even able to create a mini-bot on the spot when the actual robot broke before the last match.

Though the competitive season has come to an end, Berean’s Robotics Club of innovative thinkers will continue to demonstrate Christ-like qualities and exemplary teamwork in their pursuit of STEM knowledge and skills, Tuesdays at school from 4:45 PM to 7:30 PM and welcomes all Berean students and interested parents to stop by.
