Mark Barcelon

Mark Barcelon

Head Football Coach

We are pleased to announce that we have a new football coach. Mark Barcelon is excited to be stepping back into Berean football. Coach Barcelon has 18 years of prior football coaching experience at Berean including 6 as varsity head coach. Coach Barcelon and his wife Sandy have three sons that attended Berean and played football among other sports at Berean.

“I am blessed to be offered this opportunity to lead young men in our football program. I love coaching football and encouraging young men to live out their faith in the midst of the competitive nature of football. Learning to give of themselves for the best interest of others and their team helps build young men into men.”

“At Berean, coaches are called to have a coaching Purpose Statement. Here is my coaching purpose statement: Inspire young men to have a growing relationship with Jesus in the context of belonging to a competitive athletic team and encouraging them to grow into godly husbands, fathers, employees, employers, and members of the Body of Christ. To treat each player with these verses in mind: Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers do not exasperate your children; instead bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” Colossians 3:21 “Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.”

“I believe in simple football language, easy to understand so that players can play fast without having to think. Strength training and conditioning are crucial, they build strong bodies and strong minds. I expect sportsmanship and respect for parents, teachers, administrative staff, one another, coaches, fans, referees, and our opponents. We pick one another up. We help up an opponent, but before we can help an opponent back up, we have to have the strength and leverage to knock him down. I preach love, and part of love is giving respect to our opponents by giving them the best we have every play on game day.”

“I will always listen to our trainer Ms. Naoom. If she says a player should not practice, that player will not practice. If she says a player needs to come out of a game, that player will come out of the game. Thinking of an analogy: As an employer, employees are assigned job descriptions and duties. But, if a Cal-OSHA (California Division of Occupational Safety and Health) inspector says an employee's job assignment is not safe and to immediately pull them from the job, we immediately pull them from the job. Our Trainer, Ms. Naoom, is my invited, welcomed, and appreciated Cal-OSHA inspector.”

“Coach Hatcher will also be returning to our football program and Coaches Oliver and Brissey have agreed to stay with the program and pour into our young men. We will be introducing a couple of new coaches in the near future as well.”

“I fully support multi-sport athletes. If a student wants to play multiple sports, I say go for it, this is high school, keep grades up, and enjoy athletics. I also support student-athletes participating in performing arts and will endeavor to make schedules work for our students if possible.”
“Spring and summer workout schedules are forthcoming along with our game schedule. Team meeting forthcoming before spring workouts.”
